The Toyota 1HD engine family is a 4.2L inline-six diesel that defined the 80 Series and 100 Series Land Cruiser. Known for near-indestructible reliability, massive torque, and decades of proven performance in the most demanding conditions on earth — these engines are why Land Cruisers are trusted from the Australian outback to the African continent.
At Land Cruiser Heaven, the 1HD family is our specialty. We source low-mileage cores, perform full teardown inspections, and rebuild each engine to exacting standards before it goes into a customer vehicle.

Each variant shares the same core architecture but offers a different performance and fitment profile. Understanding the differences is the first step to choosing the right engine for your build.
1HD-T
The original turbocharged 1HD. 12-valve head, mechanical injection, bulletproof simplicity. The engine that made the 80 Series famous worldwide.
1HD-FT
The upgraded 24-valve head brings significantly improved breathing and power over the 1HD-T, while retaining mechanical injection for ultimate reliability.
1HD-FTE
The most powerful 1HD variant. Electronic fuel injection and intercooling (on 100 Series) push output significantly higher. Also found non-intercooled in the 79 Series.
