Electronic Injection. Intercooled Power.
The 1HD-FTE represents the apex of Toyota's 1HD diesel family. Introduced in 1998 for the 100 Series Land Cruiser, it combines the proven 4.2L inline-six architecture with a modern electronic fuel injection system and, in the 100 Series application, a front-mounted intercooler.
The result is a significant jump in power and refinement over the 1HD-FT — producing around 204 hp and 430 Nm of torque. The electronic injection system provides smoother power delivery and better fuel economy, while the intercooler keeps intake temps low for consistent performance.
The 1HD-FTE also appeared in the 79 Series Land Cruiser in a non-intercooled configuration — still electronic injection, but without the intercooler fitment of the 100 Series. Both variants are engines we work with regularly at LCH.

Intercooled vs Non-Intercooled
Intercooled
The 100 Series 1HD-FTE comes fitted with a front-mounted intercooler from the factory. Cooler intake air means denser charge, more consistent power, and better protection under sustained load. This is the higher-output version.

Non-Intercooled
The 79 Series 1HD-FTE retains the electronic injection system but does not run an intercooler from the factory. Still a significant upgrade over the 1HD-FT, with modern EFI and strong performance in a simpler configuration.

How We Rebuild Every 1HD-FTE
The 1HD-FTE requires extra care with the electronic injection system — our team has the tooling and experience to do it right.
Core Sourcing & Inspection
We source verified low-mileage cores. Compression and leak-down tests performed. ECU codes scanned and logged before teardown to identify any pre-existing issues.
Full Teardown
Complete disassembly. The EFI system components are carefully removed, catalogued, and bench-tested separately. All internal dimensions measured against factory spec.
Machine Work
Block cleaned and bored or honed to spec. 24-valve head resurfaced and valve seats recut. Thorough cleaning of all oil galleries.
Assembly
All new seals, gaskets, bearings, and rings. Assembled to OEM torque specifications throughout.
EFI System Service
Electronic injectors flow-tested and replaced or rebuilt as required. Injection pump serviced. Timing verified with scan tools. All sensors tested.
Run-In & Quality Check
Engine run on stand. Live data monitored via scan tool. Oil pressure, fuel trim, temps all verified within spec before sign-off.
